Many of us who live in Nova Scotia are very familiar with the famous unsolved mystery of Oak Island. There have been over 50 books written on the subject, both fiction and non-fiction, as well as museum displays, television shows, websites and documentaries. The 200-year-long search for treasure on Oak Island, and all the unanswered questions that go with it, seems to have the ability to capture the imagination and intrigue of almost anyone. Fortunately for us, and anyone else who is still entranced with this long-lived legend, a new quest to solve the Oak Island mystery has begun.
If you’re not familiar with the newly released mini-series, airing on the History Channel, it’s call The Curse of Oak Island. The show was filmed a few months ago in our area and documented two brothers, Rick and Marty Lagina, who now own a large portion of Oak Island. They’re keeping the hunt alive with new efforts, exploring the island and every possible angle that could play a role in the mystery. The story of the Oak Island treasure started in 1795 and has been pretty much going strong ever since. There have always been several competing theories behind it — and many locals in Western Shore and surrounding area even have their own take on it.
So whether you’ve been following the mystery for years, or have just been introduced to the topic — feel free to take it one step further and visit our beautiful property. Make a vacation out of it. The Friends of Oak Island society offer tours of the island June through September. We’ve got our own Oak Island museum on-site, showing replicas of the famous artefacts that were found, of course a recount of the famous legend, photos of some of the early digs, maps, as well as newspaper articles covering the mystery. Add some mystery and excitement to your next getaway!
